SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme (Singapore X Japan)

Video of the event

From 7th to 13th March 2023, Social Gifting partnered with BABA lab, and other Japanese startup for an exchange programme sponsored by the SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme. The object is to better understand how youths are empowering older persons in Japan.

Led by 27 undergraduates from Community Engagement (8) and Social Gifting, the one-week programme included a two-day community outreach event at Lions Befrienders and a public forum at Heartbeat@Bedok.

During the programme, the students and 15 elderly individuals from Lions Befrienders @ Ghim Moh learned to make traditional Japanese crafts (Omamori Pouch, Azuma Bukuro Bag, and Butterfly Clip) from BABA lab. The session was also conducted virtually via ZOOM with 5 Japanese elderly individuals to facilitate the cultural exchange.

The finished crafts were put up for sale at the "Ageing well with innovative Japanese Tech" PA Industry Guru forum at Heartbeat@Bedok, attended by Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How, Advisor in East Coast GRC, and over 150 guests.

Through this programme, we aim to bring Japan's active ageing culture to Singapore, help Singapore citizens live with dignity, and allow them to contribute to society regardless of age.

Special thanks to Dr Kelvin Tan, Head of Programme of Minor in Applied Ageing (SUSS), BABA lab, Miharu, and Lions Befrienders for making this collaboration possible! 💛
