Stories Woven by Their Hands: Voices from Crafters

We believe that crafting is more than just making products; behind every piece is a purpose and a story. Each crafter comes to crafting from a different place in life, shaped by their unique experiences, challenges, and hopes. We asked Jeffery and Zann the same set of questions about what crafting means to them.

Here is a short introduction to them:

Jeffery is diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis and has found solace and strength through his intricate beadwork. For him, crafting is more than a hobby; it helps him maintain confidence amidst his health challenges.

Zann is an optimistic and eager learner and is always willing to explore and create new crafts. She’s on a journey to strengthen her mental well-being and rebuild the confidence needed to reintegrate into society.

While their answers may differ, one thing is clear: crafting has become more than a hobby; it is a source of calm, dignity, and resilience.

Here are their stories, in their own words.

Q&A with Jeffery and Zann:

Q1: What does crafting mean to you, and how has it become a part of your life?

Jeffery: “It relaxes and calms my mind, especially now that I am not working anymore; it's a channel for my creativity and also a source of income.”

Zann: “My father was the sole breadwinner with four children, and money was always tight. When friends suggested pooling money for gifts, I often felt pressured. I even skipped recess to save up, but that wasn’t sustainable as a growing teenager.

That’s when I turned to crafting. I’ve always loved arts and crafts, and making gifts allowed me to create something meaningful, affordable, and personal. That’s how my crafting journey began.”

Q2: Was there a moment when crafting helped you through something difficult? Tell us about it.

Jeffery: “Yes, many times it has helped me to refocus my energy on something productive instead of dwelling on the challenges of my illness.”

Zann: “Yes, many times in fact.☝🏻I've always had very low self-confidence and wonder what exactly I am capable of or what I am good at. Art therapy was my favourite part of my hospital stay. It kept me engaged and gave me motivation during a very difficult time. When everything felt uncertain, crafting gave me hope. While I was bed-bound, I began drawing, writing cards, and making crafts for the nurses and fellow patients. Crafting helped occupy my time and allowed me to bring small moments of joy to those who were caring for me, as well as patients who felt lonely or unwell. It reminded me that even in my condition, I could still give back and make a difference.

After crafting, I received many positive feedback and compliments, which gave me a little more confidence and made me feel seen and appreciated. It was also a very good activity to do during the times when I was constantly being admitted to the hospital.”

Q3: If more people supported your crafts, what would that mean for you and your life?

Jeffery: It would truly help me to cope with my expenses as I don't have work income anymore.”

Zann: “That would mean so so much to me as I will have more crafts to do. It motivates me to wake up everyday with an intention to improve myself and end my day with a little sense of pride for completing the crafts and contribute to society again with my own 2 hands. 🤲🏻”

Q4: What would you like to say to someone who buys your craft and supports your journey?

Jeffery: “I would say that I truly appreciate your kind support.”

Zann: “A big thank you to everyone who has supported this journey of mine. I’ll continue to do my best with the opportunities and resources given to me, and also thank you for supporting SGifting.I’m truly grateful for your support of SGifting. Without this opportunity, my journey would not have begun. Wishing you love and joy in every season of your life. 🤗”

Hearing how crafting has shaped Jeffery’s and Zann’s journeys reminds us why this work matters. Their stories motivate us to keep going, to do better, reach further, and create more opportunities where dignity, purpose, and confidence can grow. Together, we believe that crafting can continue to empower lives, one handmade piece at a time.

Crafted with purpose. Creating change together, supported by you.
